THE OPENING GONG

Postby Viridian » Sat Jan 02, 2016 10:24 pm

The producer finishes collecting the paperwork – the fine print waiving the show’s responsibility over any injuries that may happen in the course of the contest. “If it makes you feel any better, we can pull you out if death is imminent. However, we won’t interfere with the show, so our sweepers can only pick you up after the group has gone through the stage, assuming the stalkers are done with you. Remember, these men are former serial killers. We don’t control what they do.”

The contestants look at each other, thinking of whether the producer meant that they expected fatalities. But the prize money was there. Whoever made it to the end shared in the spoils…if any could make it.

The pre-competition sequence was filmed. Each contestant was introduced, their biographies read out and each given a chance to wave to the audience. The viewers were then treated the grand entrance of the three stalkers, each appearing on a raised platform shrouded in smoke.

The first man appears to the sound of wild monkeys and birds, standing strong with his arm crossed. Bare chested, he is superbly well built with dark tribal tattoos, a straw skirt and a wooden mask with red paint. “Behold, the Lord of the Jungle, Zuma! Will you fall victim to his dark pits, or perhaps, end up on the altar for a divine sacrifice?”

The second stalker appears. Exotic, dressed in fine silk with gold accents and sitting open a lavish gold throne, nose turned up in exuberant arrogance. “We now welcome his grand majesty, Akbal, the Diamond in the Rough, or as some call, the Desert Rat!” He pretends to scoff at the crowd. “Descended from an oil dynasty, he is so wealthy, nothing can entertain him. Will he find pleasure in torturing his victims in the baking desert sands of Arabia?”

Finally, the sound of Tommyguns shatter the stage and the lights go out. Large spotlights sweep the stage to the sound of sirens. Emerging from the darkness, the final stalker. “Our third stalker, the Capo of Capos, the one true Crime Lord, the Kingpin, Frederico! What offer will he make to you?”

The announcers go through the rules for the contestants and the cameras. They must go through each stage in turn, and survivors of all three stages will be given the grand prize. At some point in each stage, the producers will select contestant to receive a free pass to escape any peril they are in. Once the contestants show their understanding, they are shown the large screen, simulating a wheel. The faces of each of the stalkers are painted on the wheel.

“Whose domain will the contestants enter first?” the announcer bellows to the shouts of the audience, in turn roaring the names of their favourite stalkers. The wheel spins.

[Die roll – 3]

“It’s the Mafia Man, Frederico! He looks disappointed at all the contestants in front of him. He only deals with high rollers, so let’s see how our contestants fare in his industrial zone. May the strongest and the smartest survive!”

The contestants are taken through to another stage. They are shown through a set of steel doors, and the room is filled with smog and the smell of iron. The room goes dark. Then, a burst of submachine gun fire peppers the metal walls.

“Holy fuck!” one of the contestants is heard shouting. “Those are live rounds!”

“I’ve killed maggots who are more worthy than any you,” Frederico shouts through his cigar. He reloads his Thompson. “Let’s see if you any of you got real guts – once I cut them open!” One of the doors swings open, showing the way to the sand quarry outside. “Oh, it’s more fun if they run,” he shouts. “Say hello to my little friend!”

“I thought this was a show about quicksand!” someone cries. “Why are we being shot at?”

“He’s probably luring us into something,” someone else whispers. “We should be careful.”

“Guys, he’s got a fucking gun! He’s going to kill us!”

Contestants choose:

1) Flee the murder room as quickly as possible
2) Exit the room, but cautiously navigate through the quarry
3) Stay hidden inside the room

Remember that each choice has a hidden success value and a chance of a random event.

Abigail chooses #1. She is only concerned with getting out of there. She doesn't care how deep the mud might be....

#3 Chim takes cover, with a line of sight on the exit, waiting to see what happens to the first to flee.

After the doors slid open, Sonja took a quick view around the surroundings. This was some kind of abandoned quarry and that crazy dude with the gun was right behind them!
On the far side of the quarry Sonja saw some structures that did look like a better place to take cover than staying here. So she quickly decided to run over there.
"What are you waiting for?? He's right behind us!" Sonja did shout as she passed two of the other girls.

Clare's only concern is not to get shot, and so the panicked girl charges towards the exit at top speed. With a sudden surge of adrenaline she runs faster than anytime before in her life. Also, she does not care whether she'll get a little muddy up ahead so long as she makes it out of the room unharmed.
