* * * SPOILER ALERT* * *

In the book, you never "see" Stapleton's demise. He disappears into the fog.

When I think about this ambiguous ending, it always seems a pretty stupid thing for Stapleton to have done. Hiding in the mire on everyone's doorstep would not escape justice. Better if he caught the next train out, or mounted a horse and galloped in the opposite direction.

If I'm ever daft enough to commit a crime, I'll make sure I leave a few clues pointing towards the nearest swamp, and everyone will just assume I went to hide in there and never made it. Case closed and I'm a free man. :D

I kind of got the impression Stapleton dashed off to escape without a real plan, rather than planning it out carefully. Someone who came up with such an intricate murder plot - using the hound and all that - is obviously impressed with his own cleverness, and so was thrown for a loop when someone actually figured it out. Heading into the mire probably made sense to him, as he knew the area well and who'd be crazy enough to follow him? ;)

Finally found another scene I haven't seen before. From a Captain Video comic. Standard, but cool. :)

A happy discovery while combing through some Golden Age DC comics.

From All-American Comics issue 90.

Funny that she had all that dialog with Green Lantern despite the fact that their both sinking to their dooms!
Tarzan to Jill Hardy: Girl be still. Not sink!!"
From "Valley Of Mystery" : Don't struggle and do not thrash around; that just makes things worse!
