These girls deserve much public shaming for their lack of care in such a dangerous place. To think that they could let themselves sink so far!!

Don't take me wrong, guys! I'm not going to describe here all the boring details of their everyday life. I only show some accidents which sometimes happen to the girls. So, you may think that the girls do nothing but get hopelessly stuck daily. No, they don't. But they got used to the fact that this shit happens...

Speaking about public shaming, you're quite right. The girls who get stuck in black soil are always become a target of mockery. And their social status drops down. Hunting in the moor is a dangerous job, so the social status of the hunters is high. But a hunter that plunged into the mire and had to be rescued is considered to be the unlucky one, and other hunters avoid to go hunting with her.

And yes, they do build boardwalks! But only in places that are on the way of many. Like, a crossing of a creek bed. Or a walk in a village. Yes, there are villages where during the rain season girls should walk on boardwalks only. An attempt of a shortcut may result in very embarrassing situation. Just imagine - a girl struggling in mud in a few meters of her own hut, stuck, unable to get out; a crowd around, nobody helps, everybody laughs!

Exactly! And if you ask me, I'd tell you that the elven girls don't smoke, but there is grass that grows around... Well, you know ;) They lick the juice from its stems, and in winter they make tea from its dried leafs. And become silly ;)

It's time to go on.

The second story (which is not finished yet) is about the brown clay.

Whereas the southern part of the Eastern Plains is a steppe, completely covered with a thick layer of black earth, its northern part is wooded hills, which are composed mainly of brown clay. The farther to the north - the higher and steeper hills are. "Elves" mainly live in this part of the plain. Their villages are hiding in the woods at the foot of the hills, and to get from one village to another, they must go through many miles of trails that run up the hills and down into the narrow valleys.

Usually walking by the trails is easy. But if it starts to rain, everything instantly changes. Being caught in the rain on the way is one of the perils on the hills. And yet we are not talking about thunderstorms that are horribly strong there!

Absorbing moisture, clay very quickly becomes extremely slippery and sticky. The "elf girls" usually wear shoes with solid wooden soles, and those shoes stick to the clay so tightly that the girls are forced to take them off go barefoot - they simply do not have enough strength to tear off their shoes of the clay surface. And nothing can keep the girls from slipping down on the slippery slopes. In the most dangerous places the girls arrange the railings of the ropes, but after a few rains the ropes become unreliable, they stretch and rip. And then the girls are uncontrollably falling down the slippery slope, sometimes along the path, and sometimes somewhere in the direction where it is quite possible that nobody will ever find them. And muddy flood waters running down around them, washing away the clay from the slopes.

This is basically what happened to two girls whom we can see on the picture. They were on their way to another village, carrying berries for trade (they don't use any sort of money, but they have a lot of things to exchange). Caught in the rain, they have slipped down from the trail, and they lost all their goods and their supplies (food, water, additional clothes). One girl, the blonde, fell head first in a ditch which was running down the slope, and slided down at scary speed. Despite all her efforts she wasn't able to slow down her fall. The second girl, the redhead, was able to grab the rope which used to serve as railings. Very likely, she could climb up by the rope back to the trail. But how could she leave her partner alone in danger?

I haven't drawn any talk bubbles, but if I'd do it, they would read:
Blond: EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEW!!!!
Redhead: Feet first! Feet first! Turn over NOW!!!

Yes, there's nothing more dangerous than falling down head first! Of course, nothing can help to avoid such horrible threats as sticking roots on the slope or dry fallen trees with broken branches sticking out in all directions down there. Hitting them (very likely, lethal) is only a matter of chance. The slippery paths on the slopes of hills are dangerous. But the main danger hides between the hills, where streams of water wash off clay down from the slopes. Down below, the lakes of liquid clay emerge. The clay settles, the water evaporates or runs off further down, and as a result remain deep boggy pits. In the dry period the clay dries on the surface, but in the depth it remains wet, thick and sticky.

When "elf girls" have the misfortune to slip off the trail down, they inevitably find themselves in these boggy traps, escaping which is very difficult. Clay sticks to skin and clothes, hands and feet caked with mud become heavy, and the unfortunate victim is sucked down deeper and deeper with every movement.

The girls know the basic rules of how to get out of clay, they learn it in school (yes, they have a school!). And they even have special classes at which they sink in clay pits and then try to extract themselves and rescue each other. But it only works well when the clay is sufficiently liquid. They often simply do not have enough strength to get out of a really thick mud. Even worse is that very often the top layer of clay is liquid, so that it is impossible to lean on it, and the lower layer - thick, which keeps the victim stranglehold.

Thus our two heroines inevitably ended up in such deep clay pit. The blonde was sliding down head first, and she didn't managed to turn over. This is how she plunged in thick clay - with her hands stretched forward. Her hands stuck deep in the clay, and her head is also ended up below the surface! All her attempts to pull her head out of mud wasn't successful. She managed to rise her head a bit, but her face remained under the surface, and she couldn't feel how deep. But she clearly felt that while she tried to get her head up, her knees were sinking. At that moment she became so scared that she was literally paralyzed with fear.

Fortunately, her redhead friend didn't leave her in trouble - she abandoned the rope on which she has been hanging, and also slipped down. She managed to control her falling so that she landed near her unfortunate friend (the collision could be deadly). She could reach her friend, grab her by armpits, and start pushing her upwards with all strength. Her friend also struggled frantically. And their joint efforts led to success! The blonde's face showed up over the surface.

Her hands were still stuck in clay, her head and shoulders were completely covered with thick clay, her hair was so heavy that she could hardly hold her head, her eyes were literally plastered, her ears and nose were stuffed by clay, but she could breathe, and this was the only important thing! She knew that she barely escaped death, and only thanks to the incredible efforts of her friend. The redhead was a strong girl, but if she could see this picture, she would never believe that she had such muscles. It was the greatest effort in her life!
