Lost in Space Quicksand

Postby Mudbogz » Wed Sep 18, 2024 1:52 am

Hi gang... Don't know if this has been posted here but this just popped up a bit ago. It's a blast from a lot of our pasts... from the old Irwin Allen TV show Lost in Space. In the episode "Attack of the giant plants" both John and Don are pulled into quicksand by vines.

I remember watching this scene live on TV. It was a dry QS pit, as it was on all the Irwin Allen shows at that time (same on Time Tunnel). A decent scene, but I wished that it had been Penny and Judy in there instead! (or even June Lockhart would have been good!)

I always wondered what he used for his quicksand. It gave way really easily, but then behaved kind of hinky once the people were in it (piling up and such). It looks a lot like kitty litter to me, but having never sunk in kitty litter, I really can't say if it was or not.

I remember this episode when it aired. Even at that young age I sensed something special and something missing. A few more years went by and it became obvious that Penny and Judy were the missing element. I recall another episode where Mrs. Robinson (June Lockhart) was telling the girls to stay away from a place where their father was working because it was "full of quicksand". Regrettably they listened to mom.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

Oh yes!!! This is the way the scene should have gone! Thanks for recreating this. And to Danger Girl’s point above, wouldn’t it be nice to know how they constructed this dry quicksand pit? It might be a liquid-free way for a sinking enthusiast to make their own home-pit.

The Lost in Space pit looks like it was made of ground up cork. When I asked her, Yvonne Craig (Batgirl) told me the caviar was dyed styrofoam pellets like the stuffing in a bean-bag chair.

I seem to vaguely recall a scene that I think was from Lost In Space :? , that had a quicksand pit below a cliff or steep embankment. A creature that looked like a sasquatch, unless it was a robot (my memory of shows I watched in the 1970's is fragmented and sometimes things get altered in my mind :? ) dumbly walked into the quicksand from the flat side opposite the cliff/embankment, sinking out of sight as it moved forward. I remember some of the characters sliding down the steep cliff/embankment into the quicksand. :?
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!
