For better or worse that "vending machine" look is going to be more and more of the fast food business. Many, including my beloved Chick-Fil-A, are getting everyone to order and pay ahead of time via their smart phone. In another ten years a McDonald's location probably will be a big vending machine with very few humans involved. There's really not much there that can't be automated right now if the price is right and robots don't leave safety pins in your McNuggets.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

Bearing in mind that, from a good deal of experience, my views are biased so as to tend to see the majority of upper-level corporate management as not terribly bright and very weak on the ethical side it is part of that opinion that fast-food chains are caught in a sort of trap. They clearly see that the overwhelmingly large proportion of their costs are for labor. Therefore they want to cut that cost by automation. If only they could cut labor costs in half, and get the same price for a burger, profits could soar. What they likely do NOT see, because they are not looking or do not want to see, is that because their other costs, especially for the food material itself, is not that great, they will be prevented by competition from getting the same price for a burger. Thus, they will still be in the trap even fully automated. This is not to say that they have much of any alternative, just that running a business is complicated and tough.

The Chinese buffet has, of course, already automated to a large extent. There are no servers except for beverages and the menu is essentially the same for all. They don't even need the kiosks.

Corporate management in too many places suffers from the "No one of us is as dumb as all of us" problem. My current employer is a living Dilbert cartoon of such behavior. What I really want to ask is if that Chinese place in Conway is still there?

Not only are they still there they are run by the same people. Several times in the past year I have met prospective local models there for an interview and have been recognized as having been a regular customer 16 or 17 years ago.

That's gratifying to hear. On one of the last MPV visits to the area we hit that place on Sunday for lunch while headed home. I jokingly admonished a couple of the more rambunctious of our number not to frighten the crowd of "Church people" that I knew would be in there. It was interesting to watch just the opposite as a great cultural enlightenment took place.

There are actually two really first class Chinese buffet restaurants. You visited, I am pretty sure, the one in a shopping center just north of the Interstate. There is another one, even better in some respects except they don't have spare ribs, about a quarer mile on the south side of the interstate. Conway is, of course, a university town. While college studets oftn do not have money for restaurant meals they do tnd to be more open-minded about cultural things than their parents tend to be. There used to be a small one in Clinton, barely adequate but convenient, but it closed about a year ago.

It was interesting to watch the normally outrageous (model name redacted) become very quiet as she looked around at people praying at the tables and politely enjoying each other's company in Sunday attire. In true fashion she later related that she found the experience kind of "creepy" and expected to burst into flames. :D

LOL. From that sort of remark I suspect her stage initials were L.R.
