Disaster Averted

Postby Mynock » Fri Jul 27, 2018 8:11 pm

/watching Youtube
/spill beer on keyboard
/computer instantly, completely shuts off

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WWaLxFIVX1s

/frantically clean up mess
/swap out keyboards
/state of sheer terror
/on-off PSU to reset breakers
/consider sacrificing goat to computer gods before pressing power
/press power
/reboots normally
/almost fall down from feelings of relief

Lesson learned: The auxiliary USB ports on your keyboard have a very low tolerance for alcohol.

Since I have a tower, it really is just a keyboard (and those I get cheaply from thrift stores). It's not a laptop.

It is a terrible thing when you think your computer won't reboot! I drink mostly coffee, but too much of it, and therefore am well-practiced at avoiding accidents but I got to admit I'm mighty careful at work as to where I keep my cup.

YouTube can be a serious spill risk...especially dog-and-cat videos and prank calls to "phony IRS" scammers.

I actually have my tower up on the shelf that's built into my desk, for display purposes and spill safety, pretty sure it wasn't the keyboard itself that shorted it, it was the auxilary USB ports built into the side of the keyboard, never even thought about the risk those posed until now. I never use them so they were basically out of site/out of mind till ZAP. Now they're covered with a piece of Gorilla tape.
