The more Athena struggled, the faster she sank! She then tried to keep perfectly still so as not to sink too fast in the quicksand!

Very nice story so far - how about Athena is feeling optimistic, now that she's slowed her descent in the mud by not struggling. But then, a big spider starts to crawl across the surface of the pit, towards Athena. She's deathly afraid of spiders, and starts to freak out as it gets closer...that worry increases with every inch the spider approaches, till she is outright panicked, struggling madly to get away from the arachnid.

Her frantic struggles cause Athena to sink quickly again - and the quicksand claims its next victim. And that spider? Well, it continues forward right over the spot where Athena was moments ago.

Yes, I have an active imagination!
