I actually got into some quickgravel once. It was unwashed "bank run" gravel full of sand, silt, clay, etc., and a combination of physical disturbance, high hydrostatic pressure and freeze-thaw cycles turned what would ordinarily make a good driveway into oatmeal. Escape wasn't the problem- the embarrassing part was that the stones in the muck painlessly shaved all the hair off my legs!

Hmm. . . perhaps I could create a pit of thick muck infused with water-smoothed stones, and market it to Ladies as a depilatory and exfoliating treatment. Hey, don't guys do that also nowadays? "Want a smooth, radiant and hairless body? Try our new patented spa treatment!"

Oh tosh! Tanya retorted, quicksand churning,
Round her knees, then thighs, then oh dear!
It got intimate with her hips and her panties,
And squished rather funnily up her rear!

I know of a spring area on a trail not too far away from my Harris Creek quicksilt slide area that is quickclay/gravel/rocks. I tried sinking into it, but the rocks grinding against my legs were painful. I think such a "spa treatment" would remove skin as well as hair, or at the very least, result in scrapes and bruises!
I sink, therefore I WAM!!!!

I guess I have to judge the potential discomfort through the eyes of others- my hide is so tough that I can shave dry with a sharp knife if necessary. A little water and a safety razor are more comfortable. 8-)

I have support for both your fantasy and Boggy Man's version.

On my very first sink ever, with my first sinking buddy at the famous Chester site that was used for video by both MPV and Kaol (who, actually, was my first buddy, which is why my first sinking happened there), the sand took the hair off my legs but didn't damage my skin. It had exactly the perfect grittiness. I came out with the smoothest legs you ever saw.

I have also encountered the quickgravel. This was a year later, and at a totally different site. And it wasn't in the sinking spot. It was around the edge of the cleanup pond. Apparently there were springs all round, pushing up both through the nice smooth clay which was the sinking spot and the (gravelly) pond that was the cleanup. Ouch. I tried to avoid that stuff on the way into the water.

I think I may have encountered something similar once as a child. We were at the seaside and I ventured out about knee deep... and the shingle-like small pebbles I was standing on suddenly gave way under my feet, plunging me up to my waist and causing me to backstep frantically to stop myself from going deeper, or even under!

At the time I probably didn't even know what quicksand was or what caused it but all this talk of 'quickgravel' made me remember that! :?

I forgot to add that if there are rocks in the mud that your feet have to brush/grind past, and the mud is thick, or locks up like quicksand or quicksilt, then when you work yourself out, you will discover that some of the knuckle tops in your toes will have skin missing in small circular patches! I speak from experience!

Quite! From my earlier days just liking paddling in mud, I wore airline socks which had a foam sole for added protection but that didn't stop me getting gashed along my big toe by a sharp stone once. Didn't realise until I got home to clean up too! :?
