Hey -
Good job. Seems like this will be out there somewhere down the road.
And I'll bet you will find it.

Since I read Papillon ages ago, French-Guinea is some kind of dream location for me. Besides the scene at the tidal mudflat there is also another location our hero visits. Some floating bog with ever changing safe passages, that only the pet of the lone dweller of that area knows. One wrong step and you're doomed!
Let's see what we have here!

Yes, Bogbud. My English class in hi school read Papillon and I remember those two scenes. Turns out Papillon is like Roots - not a true personal story of the writer (Alex Haley's roots probably don't have a Kunta Kinte; Henri Charriere may not have experienced all the things Papillon experienced). But still a compeling story with his escape with a man named Sylvain who gets off his raft too soon and sinks into the tidal flat. Papillon meets a man of Chinese heritage who hides on a piece of land with a moat of quicksand around it that his pig can safely find a way to cross. That second one would need some physics explanation as to how it can possibly work that way! The Chinese man says the quicksand gives up its dead, which I thought odd (and messy) but it atually is credible as rotting substance inside our body builds up and bloats and would make the body light enough to eventually not be able to displace the quicksand. and slowly. really slowly. rise up to the surface.

I've been looking into this, also.
It would seem that she was on a French TV series, and that this fellow, while being an actual zoologist, also acted in an episode of the show, where this scene may (or may not) be from. I think they're actually dating, also.
I subscribe to his YouTube channel and follow her on X... hoping to see some sort of update.
Nothing thus far.
