Troubles with playing Hi Def vids

Running into strange problems with playback o some of the videos lately, and wonder if I need to upgrade my video players.
Not naming producers, but on some recent "Hi_Def" videos I've downloaded recently, I find they either stutter on RealPlayer... picture looks great, but it seems to stop every few frames to pause for a bit, or, if I switch to my VLC player, sounds and frame rate are bang on, but I get a weird image effect which makes it look like I'm viewing the scene through a shimmering screen door... as in, the pixels are more visible than they should be.
I'm wondering what players and versions others use to take the best advantage of the hi-def while not sacrificing picture, sound and video playback. Thanks in advance for any and all suggestions...
