Quicksand Fans

Hi all,

Can anyone help or direct me to a video editing software package - freeware would be great. I've got plenty of home movies that I wouldn't mind editing out faces, zooming in on a frame and so on.

Any advice or help would be really appreciated.

If your using Windows there should be a editing program already on it. For just home movies I would not invest in an expensive package. Good luck Hon!!

The program referred to here is, I am pretty sure, Windows Movie Maker. This was included in XP and Vista, but is NOT included in Windows 7, so far as I can tell. Movie Maker could, I'm told, handle HD input only in SOME versions of Vista.

Windows 7 offers "Windows Live Movie Maker" exclusive to Windows 7 and is part of Windows Live Essentials and is free for Windows 7 users.

This would be a good way to go, IMO.

I would also suggest Sony Vegas Movie Studio. It's cheap, and has DVD authoring included. Also, the user interface is pretty much the same as Vegas Pro, which is an excellent program for ease of use and productivity. So learning one, would get you ready for the other. I don't know of any other entry level/big pro brother combination like that.

Thanks for the tips ... a helpful forum. MovieMaker won't 'zoom' into sections of the frames, and it has its limitations.

Fred, thanks for the link - that is useful. Gave VirtualDub a try and am finding out its capabilities. Then I put the .avi file in MovieMaker and can make some tweaks (smaller file size/type etc.)

Might have to try out the Sony Vegas Movie Studio.

It's all good fun really .

Oh, and Dave & Fred ... you guys have seriously been the pillars of the QS movie movement: just think of what has grown out of handful of 'unusual' photos (all those new producers). I'm sure I can remember seeing your work in the mid-90s. Ah, memories of dial-up!

One nice program that I use in conjunction with Adobe Premier is Videomach

It cost around 30 dollars but is well worth it. It can do a lot of stuff that Movie Maker can't.
