View count doubled

Over the last couple of days the daily view count has doubled on my main thread. You may wonder why I consider this a cause for concern? Well, the last time this happened, if my memory is correct, was in the run-up to the outage where several weeks data was lost. I may be being unduly concerned but I think it would be worth having a look to see if that issue has cropped up again. Hopefully, this is not of significance and it is just people catching up after holidays, but I thought it worth raising the matter.

A while back, my dramatic videos thread went from tens of views a day to hundreds, and even over 1000 a day! The only explanation I could think of was that the link to my thread must have been shared on social media, which caused the spike. Over time it started to taper off, only to spike again. But it has tapered off again, although it has increased to over a hundred a day. So, perhaps your thread was also shared on social media, which is responsible for your spike in views. :?

This is a possibility; however, you can't see the images unless you are logged onto Quicksand Fans, so I wouldn't expect sharing on social media to have much effect. I don't go on social media, other than here, so I can't really check. My thoughts were more along the lines of a view being counted once when the thread is accessed and a second time when diverted to the "updated buffer". This would imply that updates aren't being written to the database but are being accumulate in the buffer, until it fills and the system crashes, which is what I believe happened before.

I just logged out briefly and checked your thread, and you are right that photos can't be seen unless you are logged in (my video content is offsite so no login needed to access content except for YouTube content, where you have to log in there). I always log in when I access the site, so I wasn't aware of that, assuming that everything in the public area was accessible by the general public. :? Another possibility is that perhaps as things get darker earlier in the evening, people are going on the computer earlier and spending more time online, increasing the activity on the site. :? I just hope that it isn't a repeat of the database issue. :?

I'm hoping it is simply a matter of people catching up after holidays etc. but the jump has been abrupt. I normally get 150-200 views per day, Friday it jumped to 324, then 492 on Saturday and 298 yesterday. Since the earlier outage I've been keeping a view log (have I mentioned I'm a control freak), so these aren't vague impressions, 492 is by far the highest daily count I've seen since I started the log. Failing that, I'm hoping I may have raised the flag before the situation is unrecoverable. I was hoping one of the moderators would have responded, maybe I should have titled the thread more dramatically, something like "impending disaster" in capitals!

Social media, bots, and other factors not as obvious. It could be one, or a combination of things.

The setback the board had a while back was accompanied by some rather vague info from the hosting provider. That is not happening at the moment.

In any case, I check into the board multiple times a day. But I also don't like the ergonomics of typing on the setup here at Camp MPV, and was going to address this later today.

Thanks for responding, sorry if I'm being a pain, but it looked a bit odd to me. Social media, bots etc all plausible. It's a bank holiday weekend here in the UK, so traffic from the internet lowlife is likely to be higher. As long as it is not the earlier issue I'm happy. The "vague info from the hosting provider" is concerning, if not unexpected, it won't have inspired you with any confidence that they've understood the problem and taken remedial action to ensure it doesn't happen again. I always favoured being upfront about that kind of thing, explain the problem, say how you fixed it and tell them what's been/being done to prevent a repeat. That way you become a person who solves things rather than someone who breaks them!

Starting last year, I have also been keeping a view log so that I can monitor the number of views when I post new videos, and wait for them to drop below a certain point, before posting my next set of videos I had queued up. After everything was posted, I just kept on doing it to monitor the activity, out of curiosity. Then the number of new daily views over several days spiked - 46, 59, 328, 1062, 1051, 4254, 617, 214, etc. It would taper off and then spike again a few more times before settling down. I figured that my thread being shared on social media was the only logical explanation for the spikes. :?
