I am not certain but this may be the strongest storm ever recorded, not just this year.
I did a few calculations with the scale used to classify hurricanes and found that the increase in sustained wind velocity from category to category is 20, 15, 20, and 25 mph. While there is no category 6, the sustained wind velocity of this one (195) exceeds the boundary for category 5 by 40 mph. To my way of looking at it, therefore, this storm is a 7.

Yeah, just by hearing some of the stuff on the news, this is going to be just an absolutely horrific storm.

one year ago i still had no power thanks to 'superstorm' Sandy, which wasn't even a hurricane when it made landfall... other than power loss and a crawlspace that had to be pumped out, i was one of the lucky ones... i can only imagine what they're going thru, but i guarantee they'll need our help

I've been on really dodgy internet service for the last couple weeks, and haven't been posting much, but I do want to report that the area where Muddy Pinays models live is relatively safe. We managed to get a couple messages back and forth with family members there, and the central Luzon area in question is under what they call 'Signal 1' conditions (relatively mild).
Having said that, the central Philippines will be severely effected by this and we will be making a significant contribution to the Red Cross (directed specifically at the Philippines). Anyone capable of doing so really should consider it. It's hard to describe the feeling of 'giving'. But I will say it's not a bad one. Prayers are nice, but these folks are going to need some real help.

I was reading news stories earlier this evening (as of this writing, it's still Nov. 10 in Arizona), and they said the death toll is expected to top 10,000.
I can't imagine devastation like that. The people of the Philipines are going to need a lot of help to recover from this.
I urge everyone to contact the Red Cross and other relief agencies. As a former Red Cross volunteer, I can tell you what they really need is money. They can use the cash to buy what they need. Material donations are okay, but they often don't meet what they need, and anything left over has to be stored somewhere. Cash is what they really can use.
The people of the Philipines could also use some prayers, if you're so inclined.

As promised, MPV has donated $500 to the Typhoon Appeal (at The Red Cross).
If there's a strong response to this week's update on Friday, I'll do another $500 next week, when those funds are available.
