I remember as a late-teen running into one of these some-bitches in the dark so hard, I thought I fractured my Tibia. I still have a knot on my shin to this day.

With gas at $6 a gallon and rising, I'll never understand why full-size pickups are so popular. For work? Find a Mexican with a twenty-year-old Tacoma and you'll find the hardest working truck on the road. For towing? Valid, but most of these things won't pull anything heavier than the driver's gut. Off-roading? The closest they'll come to that is the shoulder of a freeway. Y'all gotta explain to me what makes just casually dropping $90k on one of these worth it.

They're big, loaded with features, and the aftermarket is infinite if you're the kind of person who likes to modify stuff to make it yours. Lift it, lower it, add huge deep dish chrome rims or huge 40" MT's. Go under the hood and add bigger injectors propane and methanol injection to your diesel for a thousand ft-lbs of torque.

You also don't have to pay to play. I share an old mil surplus deuce and a half with my cousin. 4 wheel drive? HA! How 'bout 6x6? As a famous Mechanic was wont to say, "My Runner ain't the prettiest girl at the dance but she'll put out first time you ask!"

Wish I had caught this sooner. Part of standard operating procedure at MPV is my busting a shin on a trailer hitch or a boat prop. I still carry permanent scars from both on my left shin. I routinely clang the hitch on my own truck.

As for towing, my Tacoma has seen it's share. I recently got a call from a close friend who has a very well worn V-8 Chevy Tahoe that quit while returning from his family home in Michigan with a four wheel U-Haul trailer behind him. I went to the scene and picked up him, his dog, and his trailer for the ride home. It was a pretty good load for a V-6 Tacoma but we handled it with relative ease.

I've got access to a V-10 Ford F-350 if I ever need to tow the house off the foundation. Typically it handles a six horse trailer.

For the record, I do not drive a truck. There is something odd with a lot of people around here (the south) regarding their relationships with truck. As an academic advisor, I once encountered a student who wracked up around 900.00 in parking fines every quarter. When I asked why he always parked in a faculty parking lot, using a student sticker, he told me, "Because faculty members tend to be more carfull about scratching other vehicles with their doors. The only thing he apparently used his brand new pickp truck for was getting to school and back.
