Quicksand Fans

A little less than 40 years ago I bought by first disk drive. It had a capacity of 128,000 bytes per floppy. Last week I bought another hard drive, but this one had a capacity of 10,000,000,000,000 bytes, which is an increase of roughly 78 million times. The price is 1982 was a little more than $500.00 and the price for the new one was 178.00, which is about 40 percent of the earlier one. That makes, by my sometimes faulty arithmetic, an improvement of approximately 200 million times
The old drive was not enough for my main project at the time - I had to use two disks for my dissertation. And the new one is STILL not enough!!!

The biggest HDD I own is 20MB. Came out of a late 70's or early 80's IBM, weighs about 1lb/MB. Obviously non-working, but makes for an interesting display piece.
Currently rocking a 240GB SSD for the OS with an additional 2TB HDD for storage. Probably far more than I'll ever use but it's what came with the machine.

The SSD will give you speed but is really not all that much storage when video files (especially right out of the camera) are concerned. The unedited footage for my current editing project is over 30G.

This is the first machine where I had the opportunity to test SSD (generic company branded) vs a high performance HDD (Western Digital Black). My game files got too big for the SSD, so I had to move them over to the HDD. I did see a noticible increase in loading times during launch and in between levels, but it was NOT a huge increase and that really surprised me, considering the price per GB of the SSD is so much higher.
