I am certainly not going to put orange pigment into any of my pits but here is a link to a news story that really could be the basis for at least one scene:

Woman in a lab coat is sent to investigate reports of orange alligators. She doesn't find what is coloring the alligators, it finds her.

I did once meet an orange claypit. And it was about that color, too. Clay coats nice and evenly, and it could create an orange alligator.

Of course I wanted to know what these alligators looked like. Pictures and video...
