Quicksand Fans

I recently acquired a new table saw and drill press - toys I've wanted for some time. As of today, and as a result, the Studio now has a new 12 bottle wine rack.

I've got some similar toys but no good place to work. Just curious what brand you got?

The table saw is a DeWalt and the drill press is Skil. For what its worth, new toys in the kitchen include a water bath for sous vide cooking, an Oster bread machine, a large KitchenAid mixer, a new mini fridge, and a new Mr Coffee.

As for a place to use all this stuff, I think you know about but have not seen the addition I put on the house in 2015. That tiny cabin you have see is now tripled in size.

Not yet but I know where I can get them. Unfortunately the county here is dry so its a minimum 80 mile round trip to any place that can sell wine and a 190 mile round trip to a store with a good selection and reasonable prices.

But I do have a combination wine cellar/tornado shelter to put the rack and the bottles in.

And I thought Myrthyr Tydfil on a Sunday was bad enough; more pubs than any town in UK, and on a Sunday they are ALL closed!

I should have replied earlier but wow...there's been a lot going on.

Always been a bit of a tool nerd. My grandfather began as a plumber and was one of those guys who could do anything. I got to learn a lot from him but never enough. My house is approaching 70 years old and home improvement is a continuous process. Nothing wrong with Skil at all but I've really become a fan of DeWalt tools. They make really nice stuff that's not outrageously priced. Been discovering battery powered tools too in the last couple of years. Never put much faith in them before but DeWalt's 20v stuff is really nice and will do everything I'll ever need. Just today I happened into a brand new Makita air compressor as a gift that will suit my needs well enough and it will go with the air framing nailer that I found on the road last year. I'm so happy.

My biggest problem is making a place to work most of the time. I've got a shed to store all my toys but when I really want to do something the deck becomes an open air workshop. That's great as long as it's not too cold or raining. Glad that you have room to stretch now because nice as it was the original homestead could get kind of cozy when the whole gang was in residence.

Well yes, eight people trying to eat, sleep, plan and execute scenes, and tolerate each other for three days in 764 square feet was a tad on the extreme side. I was picking up laundry and empty aluminum cans for a week afterward. The 3012 square feet that exists now is more comfortable, although 32 of those feet are in the below-ground tornado shelter with the wine.

The outside areas have been upgraded some as well. The deck is still as it was except it now has a rail and the wooden walkway that leads to the deck goes past an inground hot tub. I believe you (Duncan) have seen the hot tub but it wasn't heated then. Between the house and the walkway there is a sort of long, narrow patio with green outdoor carpet, some furniture, and LED rope lights at night. The old and new parts of the house are six feet apart, joined on the inside by what I call the bridge. On the outside the bridge divides the "alley" into front and back sections where I store the extension ladders and most of the outdoor tools. Also, the well connection has been replaced by one to a county water system.

Because things were built in stages there are parallel systems for certain things. For example, between the old and new parts of the house, the workshop, and the "greenhouse" there are FOUR independent heating system, one of them using propane. Another change is the originalelectric stove has been replaced by one using propane.

My next upgrade will probably be an island in the kitchen. I will built that myself except for installation of an electrical outlet in the floor. The island will have special places for the mixer, bread machine, sous vide water bath, and so on.

My biggest task, of course, will be to live long enough to enjoy it all.
