What type of sword is this?

The following was an impulse buy from the flea market. I got it yesterday for $12, which is fair, in my opinion. I love knives, swords, and things of that nature, but I don't know a lot about them. Anyway, does anyone know the name of this sword? I know for sure it's a display piece. Still cool, though!

I doubt I can be of help but I suspect it would be helpful to know its size. You describe it as a sword but to my eye it seems smaller. I have a piece that has some very minor similarities but what I have is more of a knife. If fact, what I have is really two pieces, a knife and a fork, that fit sort of inside each other.

It looks like someone tried to make something along the lines of a cross between a Tanto and a Wakizashi... the two smaller of the Japanese "Samurai" Swords. The Wakazashi was the sword most often associated with Seppuku, the Japanese art of Ritual Suicide. This particular piece doesn't look Japanese made... at least not TRADITIONALLY made.

Nifty looking. Definitely for display only though. I've watched the imfamous QVC sword video too many times to trust that as an actual cutting implement lol.

Years ago, a friend told me that the same guy was wearing a robe or snuggie, or something like that, showing off the product, and it caught fire. He also told me that they were unable to put out the fire and that this particular death was mentioned on the tv show "1000 Ways to Die". Is that true? After my friend told me that, I couldn't sleep for days! If it is true, I don't need proof, just a simple "yes, it happened" or "no, it didn't happen". I'm getting nervous just thinking about it! I hope I'll be able to sleep tonight!
