So, a BB and a LCS walk in to a bar ...

At risk of stealing ideas from TWD, Sal and I apologize ;)

THEN

On 07 Dec 41, the USS MARYLAND (BB-46) suffered the following damage;

Maryland was struck by two armor-piercing bombs which detonated low on her hull. The first struck the forecastle awning and made a hole about 12 ft (3.7 m) by 20 ft (6.1 m). The second exploded after entering the hull at the 22 ft (6.7 m) water level at Frame 10. The latter hit caused flooding and increased the draft forward by 5 ft (1.5 m). Maryland continued to fire and, after the attack, sent firefighting parties to assist her compatriots, especially attempting to rescue survivors from the capsized Oklahoma.[7] The men continued to muster the AA defenses in case the Japanese returned to attack. In all, two officers and two men were killed in the attack.
...on 30 December, the damaged ship entered Puget Sound Navy Yard for repairs just behind Tennessee. Two of the original twelve 5 in/51 cal guns were removed and the 5 in/25 cal guns were replaced by an equal number of 5 in/38 cal dual purpose guns. Over the course of several months, she was repaired and overhauled, receiving new fighting equipment. Repairs were complete on 26 February 1942. She then underwent a series of shakedown cruises to West Coast ports and the Christmas Islands. She was sent back into action in June 1942, the first ship damaged at Pearl Harbor to return to duty.

Repaired in 2.5 months and then back on deployment in 6. All while much of the Pacific fleet was demanding every bit of ship repair capability as possible.

Benchmark.

NOW

The littoral combat ship Fort Worth remains sidelined at Singapore's Changi Naval Base, waiting both for the results of a mishap investigation into how major portions of the ship's propulsion gear was damaged and a decision on where to fix the ship.

Several sources indicated the LCS needs between six to 12 months in a shipyard to repair the damage sustained in Singapore during a pierside accident while undergoing scheduled maintenance Jan. 12.

Noted.

Nice pics.
The battleship Maryland and her sister ships were the first battleships in the U.S. Navy to be armed with the 16" gun. They were built in response to Japan's Nagato class battleships, the world's first battleship to armed with the 16" gun. Then about 1920/21 the U.S., Japan, Italy, Germany, Britan and France had signed the Washington Treaty banning battleship building for the next 10 years because even during WWI even though the U.S. and Japan fought on the same side you could see there was a battleship rivalry between the U.S. and Japan though the U.S. did not outright admit it until they built the Maryland and her two sister ships (the battleship Washington was to be a fouth ship to that class but canceled during construction because of the treaty)
Lastly the battleship Oaklahoma and her sister ship the Nevada were the first two battleships in the U.S. navy to be armed with a 3 gun main turrent (two 3 gunned and two 2 gunned 14" guns)

And just in case there's any cries of 'unfair' , she took further damage throughout the war. Notable was this, a torpedo dropped from a G4M Betty at Saipan which blew a hole in her port bow (which was through and through -notice the shot) She steamed back to Pearl all the way astern to keep from further damage to the bow

Tough ship

WTF did they do to it? I keep hearing technicalese about "insufficient lubrication" but this sounds like somebody threw it in reverse while they were driving forward and just blew the transmission all to shit.....sounds like there's major engine parts that need replacing, going to have to cut a hole through the side to do the work and patch it again.

This is a separate mishap Myn, from the one Milwaukee suffered; this one I keep hearing stuff about software problems and this and that. There is clearly a lot of bullshit going on with the 5-sided-wind tunnel retards and the acolytes of this shitbox still struggling to tell you it's no a worthless piece of shit which in combat conditions would already be dead. Defence News has some stuff here.

It appears the combining gear is trashed, but not to worry... they can still run on the water-skiing speed jet engines. Just run out of gas every other day (or worse) which again, in combat would be awkward. And just getting them home, you'd need to detail an oiler to escort them to whatever shipyard they finally decide on going to. The stupid tends to bleed through, no matter how hard they try to spray over it

This is one piece from the report; please note the highlighted portions

Now, first off, a chat with whatever PAO flunky asshole here... which would involve my breaking his skull with brass knuckles or a mace
The arrogant little bitch seems to think no one fucking knows that anyone who is reading this and critical of this shitbox thinks its the fucking 19th century and is unaware what RAS is. Yeah, cockbreath, we know all about RAS. What we sorta object to, you simpering asshole, is having to conduct that EVERY OTHER DAY. Aside from the increased risk, you have to detail an oiler to escort your shining jewel-in-shit to wherever it goes. And what, pray tell, would you do in a combat situation? This thing would be as dead as any cripple caught dockside in Subic in 1941. And fixing things? I have spoken to a couple guys, and god love it, it will involve what they describe as "open-heart surgery" on the combining gear. And that means either cutting the thing in half, or somehow removing the entire engine room from the hull. Since there is insufficient room inside to repair. Seems the super-geniuses built the thing with the "well, THAT will never break down, so dont bother making any space to work on it" engineering concept.
You know, there IS a reason you don't build ships like airplanes. Unless they are supposed to be use-and-dispose-of units. Funny thing though, those things actually accomplished stuff. And had more firepower. God Almighty.....
