Stay Inside!!!

Postby Fred588 » Wed Jan 30, 2019 9:38 am

For those of you facing a blast of the coldest air in quite some time, not to mention wind, STAY INSIDE!!! Its about 20 degrees right now at Studio 588, which is not particularly bad and nowhere near a record but I understand it is a good deal colder elsewhere , especially near Bullwinkle's home town.

Turn on the computer and watch a few quicksand videos - that should warm things up some. Come into the chat room if you like and order some jungleland ribs.
Studio 588 currently offers more than 2200 different HD and QD quicksand videos and has supported production of well over 2400 video scenes and other projects by 20 different producers. Info may be found at:

I sucked down a chocolate shake today from a fast food joint, and suddenly realized that this creamy melting goodie was at least 40 degrees warmer than the air outside.

Tonight's low in my area will be a balmy -8F / -22C, which with the wind chill feels like -25F / -32C. Stupid Celsius making things worse......
You know it's cold when you go outside, take a deep breath, and can feel the snot freeze to the inside of your nostrils.

I’m one of the lucky ones... it hasn’t gone below -20F where I live.

I think Nessie does live somewhere near Frostbite Falls. When you have to light a fire to thaw out a milkshake that's cold. Should be back to sunny and mid-60's F here by the weekend though. 8-)
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

I have some history of experiencing extreme temperatures. In 1979 I spent a week training with the US Luge program (supposedly) although what I was really doing was the research for an article in the Boston Sunday Globe magazine about what it was like to train with the team. Surprisingly they took complete beginners. Anyway, the third morning when I came out of my motel room, started my dad's Buick, which had borrowed for the week, and drove off to breakfast, I noticed the manager of the motel outside his office watching me. That evening he informed me that he was preparing to offer to help start the car (for a fee, of course) and was astonished when it started by itself. The temperature at the time, he said, was -28F and had been down to -35F earlier that morning. Practice that day was cancelled because the wind chill created by sliding down the training ramp at 35mph would be on the order of -70F.

In the early 2000s I had a research project monitoring the temperature inside several volcanic steam caves inside the caldera of the Kilauea volcano on the island of Hawaii. Every three months I had to go into each of eight caves, bring out the data logger, offload data and change batteries, and then put the logger back. I did that for three years. The highest temperature (not heat index) I recorded was 156F, although I was not present when it got that high. The highest I actually experienced was 136F, although that was four feet above the ground just under the ceiling and it was only 108F on the floor. As the caves were heated by steam coming out of the ground inside, the relative humidity was always 99 to 100 percent. That, with the 156F temperature, equates to a dry heat of about 550F, or about the same as inside a pizza oven. Fortunately each trip inside a cave only took about 2 minutes as we were a bit short on tomato sauce and cheese.

For what it is worth, I have always been interested in extreme environments. My Master's Thesis measured the effects on the life span of the vinegar fly of varied total and oxygen pressure of the atmosphere. They live longest in an environment that is slightly deprived in oxygen pressure.
