Proposal for a new public area sub-forum

I expect this may have been suggested before, but - might'nt it be a good idea to have, much like UMD.net's 'Classifieds' section, a designated 'Muddy Meeting place' forum board (once someone has come up with a better name*), where members can potentially arrange to meet up IRL/meat-space? Perhaps it's just me, but I've always thought that this facility was slightly conspicuous by it's absence.

*deep contact? fen pals? Would Like To Marsh? You Got Mired? I don't know... Sump-thing like that.

There is an opportunity to bring people together here that is going begging, methinks.

There are two places for such hook-up topics on Quicksand Fans. One is the Requests forum and the other is right here in General Discussion.

In my experience, the need for an additional forum can be driven in two ways: one is that there is an overabundance of traffic in general, and a certain type of topic is becoming hard to find and isolate, and (or) certain topic types are appearing all over the board because there is no obvious place for them.

In the Requests forum, there are no requests for hook-ups in the first page (25 posts), so I don't think that we have a case of a topic type being scattered.

The overabundance of traffic issue pretty much speaks for itself lately.

Having said all of that, I would be interested in hearing other comments.

Although meeting up is not my particular interest I think my opinion on this corresponds prety well with that expressed by Dave. Asking for people who might be interested in something is a request, by definition, and the requests sub-forum is not overwhlmed by so much traffic it needs to be divided.

It might be useful to suggest that responses to reuests of this type might make good use of the email or private message capacities of the forum, at least to the extent of avoiding the posting of direct email addresses, phone numbers, and so on.

I definitely agree with Fred. As someone who finally made an effort to start posting on this forum last year, with meeting people in my area for sinking excursions being one of my main motivators, I have to say that "putting the feelers out" for contacts/hook-ups in General Discussion or even Requests is probably the best way to go, considering putting a call out for fellow sinkers can often only be a seasonal thing. No matter if there was a separate sub-forum devoted to such classifieds or not, most people would take the exchange of contact info to private messaging anyway, so I think the latter will still suffice, too. When I put out my call for New England sinkers a year ago, most people did respond directly to my thread, and nearly all were receptive to private messaging about possible plans soon into our contact.

I think a lot of us diehard users have the desire to meet someone on here, whether they be local, or in a location we want to travel to, but we have no problem in tracking them down one-on-one. If such a sub-forum were to be created, it would be pretty cool, but..we could probably live without it, lol. :D

"Most users ever online was 98 on Wed Mar 20, 2013 3:23 am".

Seems like everyone's in lurker-mode lockdown - that's a lot of passive activity... Odd.

Regarding the proposed contact forum idea; perhaps the time is not particularly ripe at the moment, but I still think that if you create a vacuum/space for something, it tends to fill itself naturally over time.

It's not odd when you consider that the system counts bots and spammers as 'users'.

A much more useful statistic would be "Most users ever logged in".

We have 'Meet Up' groups here of different kinds: singles, seniors, hikers, political causes, etc. Like minds get together for meals, and/or drinks, great conversations, etc. I've been toying with the idea of a QS meetup group on and off. Any Upstate NYers out there?

I'm not too far in NJ. I always liked the idea of a meetup group. Tried to find something in that range of quicksand/mud but closest I could get was adventure hikes.

Sounds like something more suited to a Facebook page.

FWIW, I'm on the south coast of (ye olde) England, halfway between Brighton and Worthing. I know some tidal locations of varying depth and have found a disused quarry about 35 miles NW of Brighton, although I haven't checked it's current state. Send me a PM me if you like.
