Finally! Deep New Mexico quicksand (moved from Nuggets)

With my family out of town, I finally had a chance to do some exploring around New Mexico. My first spot was a quarry that I visited before with Blazeskier, but much like last year....the deepest I found was thigh deep. That pit was almost too big (it was seriously like two football fields worth). I then tried a few spots around the Rio Grande...again, just thigh deep.

Last night I went a bit north on the interstate to a place that was fenced in and looked like a hike on the map...and it was. The areas that looked like would be good on the map...terrible. Fucking awful...just ankle deep gravel, and that's no fun. However, I noticed a sign..."danger, open water" (No pictures because it was like midnight). That's where I went.

There was a little too much water in spots, but the exposed mud I found that was not under water was about belly deep, and was perfect smooth creamy quarry quicksand. If I went out a little bit into the water, there was no bottom,so I imagine when there is little to know water available it's much better (it's actually rained here a but in July and August in Albuquerque).

I did clear so roots and little bushes from the side so I can take a long run (do the ol' escaped convict routine, as if an escaped convict would wear bikini-style lycra panties, but I digress). I did that and immediately sank to my ribs...and with a little bt of struggling...I was neck deep...it felt wonderful. Reminded me of why I'm in this crazy group, and why I love this crazy substance (and no, sorry, no "Boggy Man" type of moments LOL). I never did feel bottom about 10 feet from the edge of the Pit....it was very sensual feeling, and very deep.

I sank, treaded, crawled, and sank some more for about 90 minutes before finally cleaning off and making the long hike back to the car, which included quiet a climb by the way.

In all an awesome night, and I'm glad I have a place to sneak into carefully in New Mexico! Desert quicksand...yum!

I really need to do that some day! Until that day, I will have to live vicariously through great accounts like this. Sounds like a dreamy location.

I'll bring the digital camera next time, which won't be for a while, but it's at night and dark. This spot was about 25 minutes from my house. I knew there was no guard or anything...just a little barbed wire fence that was easy enough to deal with. Then the hike....up the hill (like way up the hill), then down, and up the second one...then to find the spot in the quarry/excavation area, which was the slurry/silt retention area.

Perfect in my eyes.

Like I said it's doubtful I revisit this year because of work and wife, but if it will happen next year, I will let folks know well in advance.
