It's still a work in progress, but I'd like to improve it from now on.

Since it will be made in a garage, I won't be able to make forest areas or other structures due to space constraints.

DIY stores in Japan don't stock clay in the first place. Even building material stores basically have to order it, so I think it will be expensive, so I emailed the mine that produces bentonite directly.

From my research into how to obtain clay in Japan, I found that the easiest way for individuals to obtain it is to contact a specialist bentonite trading company or to purchase soil improvement material from an agricultural cooperative. As for peat, large pieces were available at DIY stores.

Whether or not any sort of natural-looking background would serve any purpose depends, I think, on the reason for having a pit of this sort. If the pit is for recreational use then the background is irrelevent. If it is for filming then it matters a lot. My indoor pit is used for both - I film scenes and the pit can be rented for almost any purpose, so it has a background on three sides. That is built from a variety of materials, including very large, painted sponges, faux flowers, and faux foliage. For dramatic effect and to help make the background more realistic, almost all scenes are shot as night scenes, and there is even a machine to make fog. None of that would serve any purpose when used recreationally.

As you said, the reason I decided to build a pit is for recreational purposes. After watching the video, I was really attracted to the texture of the clay and wanted to try soaking in it myself, so I decided to build one. So it will be a completely private pit. It is not for the purpose of filming.

Since I am building it on my own, I am doing everything myself, but I thought I could get professional advice here.

I haven't received a quote for the clay yet, but I am thinking of purchasing 50 bags of 45 pounds.

Be very sure that whatever you use for a container is very strong - wet clay is very heavy. Whether 50 bags is enough, or too much, depends on the size of your pit, and to some extent of the type of bentonite and thick or thin you want it. Do not try to mix the whole 50 bags at once - do just a few at a time and give it time to absorb the water.

If you are building a pit for recreational purposes on your own, you should be careful here. If you have any advice, I would appreciate it if you could teach me. The conditions for building a pit are as above.
