Huh, you're surprisingly near to me. Would definitely consider meeting up, but definitely would be an initial meetup first e.g. in Carlisle to make sure we are compatible, if that makes sense :)

Got to say, been to the tidal flats in the south lakes. Not sure if it’s classed as morcambe bay or not. But I’ll tell you what. They’re absolutely fantastic. Very hard to get out of though…

Sounds fun :D

I found a quarry near me with a great expanse of mud hundreds of metres across, full of roosting gulls so I figured it can't have anything nasty chemically, very easy to get access to on the opposite side to where any trucks are and as non-overlooked as these things get. Though I still only dared to sink after dark. At first it seemed like the mud was shallow but no, it's a false bottom and by "working" it I sunk further, encountering more thick and thin layers and getting to chest deep <3

Cleanup options are poor, though the walk back to the likely parking place does pass near a lake that might be usable. (I just got dressed over my muddy body).

Hey,

It's great to hear there are so many of you in the area. For anyone who is interested, I have found a pretty great mud hole that I thought I'd share with you. As I had shared in other posts, there are loads of mudflats around the river Mersey (Crosby beach) and river Dee (Thurstaston beach) which has good areas for shallow mud play. This depends on how busy the beaches are or how brave you are willing to venture out.

Recently, I have focused more time on an little known coastal walk along the River Mersey by the airport so I thought i'd share my experiences.

It was a warm sunny, mid-week, day when I decided I wanted to explore the muddy trail in greater "depth". My plan was to walk along the entire coastal walk to make a note of how many people were on the pathway (on the coast or hillside path running parallel). Temptation got the better of me and the first mud puddle I find (just underneath the giant airport light structure) I step right in. The mud on the outskirts looked firm and almost dried up before softening by the puddle. You can imagine my surprise when it takes my foot all the way to the brim of my welly. This stuff was thick and heavy. It took me 2 minutes to wriggle out of the stuff. At this point I decide to change out of my wellies and cargo trousers and into my lycra, shorts, and surf shoes (Sexy stuff!). Note to all - highly recommend surf shoes. Skin tight, light, and easily cleans.

There were patches of mud and quicksand along the trail where I got to have some fun. Unfortunately, I found the floor around thigh deep but it was nice to experience the heavy compression of the smooth mud squeezing my legs. Each step was a different experience. Some of the stuff was heavy and sticky, then a step later I lost my leg in a gulp and bubbles.

Only once did I hear some people on the path above in the 3 hours I walked. This gave me the confidence to try this next bit, the good bit.

Back at the structure, I ventured towards the mud puddle I initially got stuck in. I know this was deep because I previously plunged down to thigh deep last year. I don't know why this particular puddle is so deep, I can only imagine it is man made when they were digging to build the supports for the structure. Anyway, I strip myself of my layered clothing until I was in my skintight lycra/under armour. Because the mud puddle was hidden by tall reeds, I decide to be brave and set a challenge to see how deep I could go.

Step one, sucked above the knee and slowly sliding further. Bubbles gurgled as it continued to take my leg. Step 2, both legs disappear into the dark ooze. I squirm and try to lift both legs out but that quickly slides me deeper. I continue to struggle to see how deep I can get myself and before I knew it I was up to my chest. The mud was heavy and thick but had no issue sucking me down. I certainly enjoyed the compression and smooth mud around my legs, crotch, and torso. It felt even better then it took my arms past my elbow when I pushed my hands down. After around 5 minutes, I decided not to push my luck and got out of there. Luckily I was close to the firmer ground on the side to lift myself. Any more in the middle and it would be been a much harder ordeal.

A quick cleanup and change of clothes in the reeds and it was as though nothing happened. Ignoring some streaks of mud in my hair and behind my ears.

Anyway, I thought I'd share this story and the location of the mud pit. I know how hard it can be to find good spots in the UK so you're welcome to use this one.

I've attached photos of the experience. Please be aware, high tide covered the all mud puddles at 10m. In this area it can creep up to 11m and even higher in spring tide. An hour after high tide and it's all clear.

Sounds like some great mud, but personally I'd be wary of mucking around right by the airport ALS (Approach Lighting System) - feels like an increased risk of the authorities being suspicious.

Hi, While I am based in North Lincolnshire I am often in the North West and always keen to meet up with like minded guys for messy and muddy adventures - where I am located I am a few minutes walk away from the Humber estuary and many a muddy location, much of the tidal mud is around 4 to 7ft deep and exploring these locations should be done with care.

I lived in Lancaster back in 2014 and upon finding the coastal muddy areas close to Aldcliffe, I was often waist deep and enjoy the mud in-between tides although I kept clear of more deeper channels and footpaths as dogwalkers and Karen's with video camera are very annoying.

Hey!
Im in the North West, and looking for like minded people too. Im new to this, havent had much experience with sinking.
That 7ft deep tidal mud sounds amazing though. Id love to see how deep it would suck me in!
Karen's with videocameras do sound annoying. Need a remote spot for sure

Hey fellow Brits!

If you've seen me post on other pages recently, I'm new to this but making a few friends.

If any of you are interested in still finding spots to do this, I'll gladly help or take part.

Feel free to email me at helenob555@gmail.com

Unfortunately I can't see any messages here.
