I'm sad at the venom I hear. Personally, I had a lot of fun, and nothing but good memories from DeepSinking. The Sinking Island was amazing, and honestly, I still prefer the experiences I had there to more modern versions like Second Life. If it's gone, I find that sad. Sure, there was a change of philosophy, but that doesn't in any way diminish the experiences I had, nor the memories I treasure. One person signed the lease, as it were, and one person had to face the responsibility and liability. if that one person had an incident, or a change of heart, or was just an asshole, I still have nothing but goodwill and fond memories.

Ages pass. Things come and go. ASFWAM and ABEFWAM had their pinnacles. QSFans will too. I won't talk stink about this place when it's gone, either.

That is truly good of you to take that attitude about it. I think the pain comes from having felt as if we owned part of the place and were thrown out. What is a board without those who frequent it? We all had invested our time, built relationships, etc. and then we felt treated badly and finally banished. For what? For reasons that made as little sense to most of us as they do now. A philosophical divide perhaps but there was no discussion. Boom! An eviction notice and we were out. We had an emotional investment there and it hurt. Add to that we didn't realize how much better it could be until QSF got rolling. After learning that many of the less pleasant practices of the moderators weren't necessary we felt it even more. Having been one of the first mods here I know this from my own experience. Dave set an ethical environment that freed QSF from the abuse, the cesspool, draconian punishments and age checking, paranoia about some mysterious dark force that was out to get us, all gone. Moderating was relatively simple and pleasant here because of that.

There has been discussion about how the time for places like this is passing into the world of social media. Boards like QSF are too static and Facebook, Twitter, Vines, Instagram, and the like are taking over. That may be the case but when this place too has gone quiet I will feel very good about the time spent here.
It's a dirty job but I got to do it for 27 years. Thank you.

I actually recall predicting the whole demise of Deep Sinking. I mentioned that the site owner had created a wonderful playground, we were lucky to be allowed to play there, and if anybody didn't like the rules they were free to set up their own playground and hang out there. :|

The only thing that really upset me is that I wrote some of my best QS fiction for the "Late Night" forum over there. And quite a lot of it was written on-the-fly, direct into a browser window, and not into a document file on my PC. I have no way of getting any of that back now.

For all the good memories, that was also somewhat of a dark time in my life. I was at the time dealing with a stalled career, internet addiction (thank you, Second Life) and some bizarre but mostly harmless psychological symptoms that neither the DSM V or ICD-10 has a name for. :?:

Ah, well. I guess I'll just raise a virtual glass of whiskey in memory of all my friends, enemies, and (cyber) lovers. I could name names, but what happens on Sinking Island stays on Sinking Island. I wish you all peace, happiness, and long life.

Okay, I better get off this topic now- it's late, I'm half asleep, there's a sliver dragonet curled up on top of the CPU, the blonde warrior babe passed out on the bed is snoring like a chainsaw, and an elf chick wearing a black PVC nurse's outfit just walked past the bedroom door. . .

Deep Sinking used to be a place that I frequented every evening and posted many of my adventures, until that fateful day, April 1'st, 2009, when the owners decided to eliminate all adult stuff. I thought it was an April Fool's joke, but it wasn't. I tried saving as many of my adventures as I could to my computer before everything was deleted, for archival purposes, but lost it all when the hard drive failed on my first iMac. :( However, I was so glad that Quicksand Fans was created right away after Deep Sinking made the change. :) Everybody quickly migrated here, eventually leaving only crickets chirping at Deep Sinking. I was surprised that it lasted as long as it did.

I had thought about doing some posting there, but I felt that participating in one forum was enough, given the few hours I have each evening to do so (from after watching evening tv until I am ready to go to bed, which I try to do before 1 am or earlier), as well as browse through other select sites on other subjects.

I think that as long as there is a community of quicksand fans, Quicksand Fans will always be around. It might one day change to a different online venue, perhaps change its name, get new owners taking over when the current owners are unable to continue, or any combination, but it will always exist. Forever. 8-)

While any feeling of strong anger, at this point, does no good and might do harm, I do think the anger was justified at the time. I also feel that we all have a right, almost an obligation, to shun or at least be cautious with those who did what was done to the old site. While in a technical sense that site was private property it was also a community. If some pioneer arrives in an area and begins a settlement and then other arrive, are invited to move in, and do so, a community is established. If later on, the pioneer becomes unhappy with some of the later arrivals and decides to move on, he is free to do so. But, that pioneer does NOT have the right to burn the community down. That is what, metaphorically, was done (in my view) and that is why many members of that community have such strong feelings.

Much of what was done at the old site was very good, I think, especially sinking island. Even though I used it solely as a chat room (I did not frequently leave the cantina to visit the trails) it meant so much that as soon as I could after its demise (a couple of years unfortunately) I built a replacement as best I was able. Life goes on.

I noticed it went down awhile ago. I thought there may be a technical hiccup or something. But I do agree, things have gone downhill since that day the sand was hardened. Don't know if that analogy works, but that's all I could think of lol.

I had a lot of fun there myself. I still went on Sinking Island now and again, though usually on my original account that I could alter my profile to for some weird reason. Maybe someone will remake Sinking Island for use here. That would be pretty sweet.

Exactly that.

Notice was given in plenty of time. I responded by deleting all of my stuff. It's just not practical to go in and copy every posting you ever made on a message board.
