The Boggy Man Report #6: Thicker And Doughier!

On Saturday, August 14'th, 8 days after my previous adventure, I had my next one! Because of my parents being away, I had to bike up into the mountains on my own, expending a fair bit more time and energy than my previous bikerides this year. But, by the time I reached the regular "drop-off" point, it was some time around 12:30 pm, which was roughly close to the time that I was dropped off the last time, when my uncertainty about going cost me an entire morning. I was deeply concerned about getting knee pain returning, but leg cramps always seemed to be the norm whenever I biked all the way up on my own. So, because of that, I didn't hold too much hope for shooting any sinking videos this time, since I would likely be unable to complete any scenes due to the painful leg seizures. :x But, there was always some hope. :)

It wasn't until I reached the turnoff to Crescent Road, that it happened! My right leg seized up just as I was about to make the climb up the steep initial part of Crescent Road! :x I had to instead walk my bike up, and when I tried to bike again, the leg seized up painfully again! But, after the steepest part, I was able to resume biking, and the cramps subsided. I noticed many more tire tracks on the road, and wondered what the extra activity was about. Then, as I got closer to the pond, I noticed many more cattle in the area than before, making me suspect that cattle truck(s) were bringing up more cattle into the area, making me concerned about any falling into my pit, which would put it out of commission, and bring attention to it in terms of animal rescue! At the side trail leading to the north side of the pond, there were a few cattle, but I walked my bike around them so that they would head away from where I was headed. Then, I laid my bike beside some trees, got my things, and was ready to roll! :D

I had been a bit concerned about one night of rain that happened between the previous bikeride and this one, but was happy to see that the water was lower than last time! :D There was more mud exposed, and even the top of my sinking spot didn't have a wet, mushy film on top either! :D It looked perfect for a video, but I decided not to, because of the threat of leg cramps ruining the action. Instead, I planned on having a nice underbog sink with my swim goggles and a pvc pipe breathing tube. But first, I took a couple of pix of the sinking spot to show how it looked this time, and noticed that something had left a trail through the mud:

I got undressed, applied insect repellent to my head, including my hair, put my swim goggles on my forehead, grabbed my breathing tube and jumped in from the south side, facing north, away from the sun. I landed in up to somewhere between my stomach and chest, with the mire farting around me. I slowly sunk deeper, monitoring my legs for any sign of cramps. But, they felt fine, and I was starting to wonder if I should have shot a video after all. I had already disturbed the surface, so I couldn't get out, clean up and then shoot my sink over again, without making the entire surface uniformly mushed. So, I just continued, deciding to try for a shoot later on in the afternoon, just like last time.

I laid the breathing tube down on the surface in front of me, but to my right, and continued to enjoy the sink into the thicker doughier ooze, which rose over my armpits. Because it was still early in the afternoon, and we were just recovering back to the hot weather again, the mud felt a little cool higher up, and the heat in the air wasn't quite as strong as I would have preferred. But, it was still quite enjoyable.

I worked my arms into the mud, and struggled, the thick ooze closing over my shoulders, and rising to my chin. I continued to work myself down deeper, and was happy that the leg cramps weren't really a problem. :) I had to tilt my head back as the mire rose up to my mouth, and then had to put on my swim goggles. I held onto the breathing tube, as the mire rose even higher, with a ring of black closing in from the sides over me, making my view of the blue sky get smaller and smaller. As the mire closed over my face, I then wiped it from my mouth and inserted the breathing tube in my mouth.

I pulled myself under, breathing through the tube, and mostly exhaling through the mud, although I was also able to exhale through the breathing tube, since it wasn't too long. My exhaled breath through the mire was a constant hissing sound, but as I got deeper, it became more broken. I did notice that I could start to feel some leg cramps, but they weren't very bad, and seemed to go away with not too much problem. However, I had been concerned about the fact that I had just eaten two pizza pops on the way up, which were sitting in my stomach, and sure enough, I had such a strong bloated feeling that I couldn't stay under that deep for too much longer. :x

So, I had to rise back to the surface, where my legs not only felt better, but my stomach did, as well. After letting out some burps, I felt not as bloated, and was ready to go back down. But, the taped end of my breathing tube, the end I stuck in my mouth was all caked in mud, which I had trouble wiping away. :( So, I inserted the other end, hoping not to chip a tooth on the hard pvc pipe, and went back under the surface, to enjoy being in the underbog world again.

However, while my stomach felt a bit better, it was still not the best, and some mud had gotten inside the breathing tube, which was falling into my mouth. So, I decided to cut my underbog experience short, and rose back to the surface. I tossed the breathing tube aside, and did one more brief submergence, pulling myself under while holding my breath, pausing, and then working my way back to the surface to breathe. I wiped the mud away from my swim goggles to let me see light, and then from the rest of my head. But, when I wiped it from my hair, it started to feel cooler from the evaporation. I removed the swim goggles and tossed them to the grass to the west, near my breathing tube. I then worked myself up into a horizontal position, and began to lay on the surface, mushing it up and struggling there, noticing how the top felt nice and warm from the sun, especially the undisturbed stuff. I mushed up the north side, but had just worked myself over through the sticky goo to the south side, and lay down on it, facing east, when I heard a low flying airplane! I quickly made it to solid ground on the south side, and dashed into a clump of alders until it passed by, overhead. I then returned to the bog, and enjoyed laying down on its warm surface, before mushing it all up nicely. I struggled vertically as well, but with no more submergences, and enjoyed the experience, even though things hadn't heated up yet as much as I would have liked.

So, I worked myself out, wiping the mud from my body as I went, and headed to the pond, where I waded just past the mat of rushes, to a small patch of open water amongst the pondweeds. But, the water was also not fully warmed up yet, with the layer of warm water on top being not as thick as I had hoped. But, I managed to clean my head, where the mud had begun to dry up, and upper body, rubbing vigorously to remove the brown scum that always stuck to my skin when the mud got thick. I also got my breathing tube and swim goggles cleaned up nicely, with the swim goggles hanging on a dead alder tree branch to dry out.

With my upper body cleaned, I put on my glasses, and headed to the south end, where I once again had a stimulating horizontal struggle in the gooey clay on the west side of the smaller pond there. But, as before, I always started feeling less chilled, until I went into that clay, which was shaded by alders, and appeared to be spring-fed. So, every time I finished, I was back to being quite chilled again, but its feel was too alluring to pass up!

I finished the cleanup in that smaller pond, and returned to my things, air-dried, and got dressed. I wanted to wait an hour, until 4:30 pm before having my sinking video, the same time I did the video last time. I would be warmed up by then, and raring to go! So, I grabbed my things, and on the way to my bike, I set the stuff down in the grass and decided to take a few more pictures of some of the mud that was exposed around the area:

After taking the pix, I returned to my bike with my things, and only had around half an hour to spend biking. So, I decided to check out the sideroad further up Crescent Road that I had just took a glance at last time. I followed the branch on that road where it seemed to follow a marshy willowy stream, noticing some breaks to the south, which could be marshy, but didn't have time to check it out. I had been in the area years ago, and if there was anything of significance, I would have known about it back then. I headed up a little further, and at my turnaround time, I noticed a bull on the trail. So, I was careful not to disturb him, and turned around and returned to my pond, all nicely warmed up, and ready for my sink, hoping that this little bit of extra biking didn't increase the likelihood of leg cramps.

I got back to my sinking spot, and changed into my junk shorts. Then, I took a couple of pictures of the bog that was going to be sucking me down on camera:

CrescentBogViewE7.JPG

CrescentBogViewE8.JPG

Now, it was time for me to get down to business! I noticed that for the first time this year, the coniferous trees further away were starting to cast shadows on the meadow, very close to my bog, and I wanted to get the video done before my bog was shaded! I grabbed the stick I had been using for the videos, and decided to try shooting from a different angle this time. I always shot from the south side, but decided to
shoot from the west side for a change to get a different view, and continue to have the sun on my face. So, I found a spot in the sod where I could break through, and poked the stick into it. I then screwed the Gorillapod onto my camera, mounted it on the stick, and centered the scene the best I could, given that the sun was behind me and bright. But, I still managed to make out the picture on the lcd screen and when it was centered, I was ready to go! :D I clicked the record button, and the camera started recording!

CrescentBogViewE9.JPG

I went around, and entered from the south side, orienting myself to face westward towards the camera when I leapt into the center of the patch of muddy ground. I landed in chest deep once again, with some bubbles farting around me. I then began to struggle, and try to get out, without much luck, as before! This time, the mud was thicker, and the wrinkled elephant-skin-like surface heaved and pulsated around me, as the doughy ooze slowly sucked me down deeper! This time, as the mire closed over my head, I never dug out the mud, opting for a sooner final closure of the bog, allowing me some time to film more of the escape afterwards before the 8m, 20s approximate time limit for 720p videos was reached for QuickTime Motion-JPEG movies on that camera. Instead, I tried working myself up a little before it started closing over me again, and my breathing started to become more of a rushing sound as the suffocating muck closed tighter over my face. Finally, I took a deep breath, and pulled myself all the way under, slowly retracted my hands down to join me beneath the wrinkled surface of the doughy paste, and blew some bubbles which hissed to the surface this time because the mire was so thick. I felt that I could have done better if I had pulled my head down even deeper. But, it was too late for that. Holding still, I did a very rapid count to 10 before working my head to the surface, wiping the mud away from my face as I inhaled some air, getting a little bit of mud in my mouth, which I spat out as I caught my breath. I was back in the world of the breathing again!

Neck/chin deep in the heaving ooze, I then proceeded to wipe the mud from my head, before deciding to do another submersion. So, I began to once again get sucked under the surface, until my nose and mouth were the only things left to be covered. I finally took a deep breath, and then pulled myself under again, the gap closing shut, and then dragged my head down even deeper, before letting out my air, which still hissed to the surface, but it wasn't continuous, but broken. Then, I had to work my head back up to the surface, but started to inhale before I finished wiping the mud away from my face, getting a bit more mud in my mouth, which I spat out immediately.

Now, I was finished with going under, and proceeded to wipe the mud from my face and eyes, rising up to my chest, and wiping away more mud. I finally opened my eyes, and, glancing at the camera, made the comment "The Boggy Man slowly rises from his native habitat." as I continued to work myself higher up out of the thick doughy quagmire. I then laid back, and worked my legs up to the surface of the sticky, doughy ooze. Then I maneuvered myself around to face east, and then began to mush up the mud around the area, just have some fun struggling in the sticky goo on camera. I mushed it all around, even though it had already been mushed earlier, noticing that there was swamp gas farting out of the mud occasionally as I disturbed it. I finally worked myself out of the mire on the east side, wiping the mud off my body as I went, noticing how much swamp gas was farting out from the east edge, hoping that the camera captured that. I also noticed that because the mud was thicker, it held together better, and therefore came off my hair in large globs, and peeled away from my junk shorts nicely as I sat on the sod on the east edge. I got my legs and feet out, and pushed the mud off them, back into the bog.

I quickly headed to one patch of water to clean my hands and part of my arms so I could turn off the camera, noticing a garter snake disappearing into that same pool of water. When I returned to the camera, I noticed that it had already stopped recording, making me wonder when. :? I would find out later. I noticed that the shadows were indeed sweeping over the area of the bog, something that annoyed me in the past as it got late in the season. I pulled the stick with the camera mounted on it out of the ground, and set it down with my things, with the camera laying on my clothes.

This time, because it was getting late, I decided not to do any cleanup in the small pond on the south end, and not bother with any stimulating sink in the sticky clay on its western shore. I was going to do all my cleanup in the immediate area. So, I headed back out to the same open patch of water I had done cleaning earlier, noticing how the water had warmed up nicely since earlier in the afternoon! :) I easily cleaned up my upper body, before heading to the mat of rushes floating on the surrounding mud, which then got covered with water as my weight caused the mat to sag. I cleaned up my lower body better, as well as my junk shorts, wringing them out and hanging them on another alder branch that wasn't shaded. I finished my lower body cleanup, and returned to my things.

While drying off, I watched the video I had taken. The color didn't look right on the lcd screen, but I thought it was just the screen. I noticed that the bubbles at the end of my main sink didn't sound that loud, and were only rushes of air, which was what I had noticed when I was doing it. I discovered that the camera captured my "Boggy Man" comment, as well as me working my legs briefly to the surface, and then floundering around in the mud. But, just as I was about to begin to churn the surface, the video ended. :( But, at least it did capture me twisting around in the sticky goo! :) I also noticed how quickly the tree shadows moved over the bog.

I got dressed, and took some final pictures of the patch of sucking goo. It is amazing how much exciting entertainment one can find in a patch of muddy ground!:D I just want to jump through the computer screen back into those pictures to sink there, since I am not there now, if you know what I mean! ;)

I grabbed my things, returned to my bike, and around 5:40 pm, close to half an hour earlier than last time, started heading home. Because this was the first time this year I biked into the high elevations on my own, I took it easy all the way back so that my legs wouldn't feel too much stress, since I didn't want to take chances with knee pain. I also wanted it to be a relaxing bikeride home, since I really felt extra worn out for some time afterward whenever I exerted myself on the way home in the past. So, my return trip took a bit longer this time, with me arriving home at around 8:52 pm, just before it got dark.

Overall, it was a nice day, although we were just in the process of warming up. I knew that things would get better with the increasing heat over the next days. The temperature that day hit 31.7˚C, or 89.06˚F in Vernon, but always cooler in the mountains. By the time I am ready for my next bikeride, the heat will have peaked, and according to the forecast, temperatures are going to start dropping, but still stay dry. I just hope that I am ready before things cool down too much.

But, in the meantime, after looking at the video on the computer, I discovered that with the sun and camera both pointing in roughly the same directions, at similar angles, with some slight difference (there had to be or the camera would have cast a shadow on the bog), the exposure was off, with me being extremely overexposed, as well as anything else that the lowering elevation sunlight shone directly on! Also, the colors were horrible! There were purple squares and chunky purple patches all over parts of the surface of the mud, and where it wasn't purple, the surface, instead of being dark brown or grayish brown, looked plain gray, almost like solidified lava! But then again, the unusual colors and enhanced surface features did seem to add an interesting look to the heaving, sucking quagmire in the video!

For the past couple bikerides, I had been saving my videoed sink for the second one, after the surface was mushed up during my first sink. But now, it seems to be thick enough for me to have a video of my first sink, and hopefully it will be nice and thick on the surface, especially since there is no rain in the forecast to make the surface softer. That also means that the surface will retain its wrinkled texture, which should make things look interesting. I also plan on trying out shooting in AVCHD-Lite mode this time, since I noticed that YouTube does in fact accept and convert .MTS files. That way, there won't be any 2 gig limit that the QuickTime Motion JPEG videos have, which means no more 8m, 20s approximate time limit to the 720p videos (my latest undivided video footage taken on this trip was 8m38s in length)! :D I just have to make certain that the length is kept within YouTube's maximum of 15 minutes, although my camera can do some internal video editing to keep things within that limit. So, I can't wait to see how thick the mud is next time! :D
